This full color flipbook series created in ‘96 for Kelloggs‘ Corn Flakes.  The flipbooks are based on cartoon characters Idefix, Asterix & Obelix.  Each flipbook is 25 pages in length, and are in French.  When manufacturing a flipbook for kids, it’s a good idea to look for a manufacturer who’s flipbooks are under 40 pages in length so kids can use them.

In ‘02 Melcher Media created The Harley-Davidson Action Book Series.  The series consists of 6 flipbooks ranging from the assembly of the innovative V-Rod motorcycle to a record breaking jump.

Other clips include SPEED; a 0 to 175 mph drag strip pass, racing around a dirt track as well as ice racing on a frozen lake.  The collection ends with a  traitorous summit hill climb.

Ask yourself this….when your child picks out a cereal, is it for the prize or the best prize?? EXACTLY!

Post Cereal correctly used the concept on how flipbooks should be marketed.  They created an action packed Hockey series consisting of 12 flipbooks.  Although the covers are in color, they chose to use B&W clips.  The clips range from great saves, rock hard wrist shots,  glass shattering slap shots, exciting end to end rushes and so much more .

Some of the players featured in the series are; Johnny Water,  Jean Béliveau, Ron Ellis, Gilles Tremblay, Bob Pulford and “Gump” Worsley just to name a few.

When a company decides to create a series of that magnitude; you know their intention is to increase sales…….what hockey fan wouldn’t want to collect all 12?  How many boxes of cereal were purchased?  And more importantly, how many kids brought their Post Cereal Hockey flipbooks to school in the attempts of completing their collection?

Eroticism in flipbooks has been around since the 1900’s.  And at one time they to faced prohibition……making this product highly sought after.  Employees of specialized shops such as The Rue de la Lune in Paris were some of the first to sell erotic flipbooks.

That country has created the majority of erotic flipbooks, looking at this dated flipbook by Lebende Photographien is just an example of how old this type of advertising tool has been around.

Some erotic flipbooks are simply made by cartoonists in low production numbers and are more for a laugh than a turn on….

In the late ‘80′s and early ‘90’s German publishing companies continued printing flipbooks but increased the quality of footage, as seen in Erotic Mini Movie and Harlekin Geschenke’s Juke Box Strip.

German’s Next Topmodel Flipbooks

                           Yes, you read it right…… Beautiful models walking down the run-way featured in flipbooks.  An innovative agency used flipbooks as a marketing tool to promote German’s Next Topmodel hosted by the gorgeous Heidi Klum.  The German version of this series consisted of up to 17 episodes and has been in production since ‘06. The show has used opening theme songs by music legends Notorious B.I.G, Seal and Britney Spears.

The flipbooks were obviously targeted toward young girls…..but Im sure any GUY who got their hands on one took a look, or 2, or….. 3. lol 

The collection consisted of 15 flipbooks, featuring the first years contestant (’06); Andrea, Anne, Celine, Charlotte, Janina, Jennifer, Lena G. (winner), Lena M., Luise, Micaela, Rachel, Yvonne (runner up) …..but no Heidi???  The scenes chosen were the girls walking the run-way in beautiful attire.

This is a great example of how diverse flipbooks are and how it can be targeting to any and every age group.  The way I would have approached this marketing campaign is, I would also have 15 or more flipbooks available but with generic covers.  Generic covers allow recipients of this product to interact both in person & online in the attempt to collect the entire series.  Obviously this process would generate a lot of FREE “buzz marketing.”  As for distribution, they would be handed out at major mall’s every Saturday for several weeks prior to the premier; the product is the ultimate catalyst for informing viewers of  show-times, new URL’s, as well as adding scent (scratch-n-sniff) enticing girls to a new perfume.  You could even add  tear off coupons for discounts on clothing & shoes.

Porsche, Mercedes, BMW & Audi use Flipbooks WHY aren’t YOU?

In 2000, Porsche Cars North America Inc distributed an 80 page Boxster flipbook.  The flipbook reads “Feel the exhilaration as you thumb through 80 pages of Porsche literature.”

The action sequence features the Boxster ripping down a winedy mountain road on a beautiful summer day.  On the flip side, the pages are covered with information about their newest model.

Car manufacturers are among the most active using this product; vehicles in motion or crashing make the ideal action sequence!  Mercedes showcased its 300 CE-24 CabrioletAudi used flipbooks on several occasions including publicizing its 2000 A4 model, and ensuring their celebrated victory (in 2.4 seconds) at the 24 Hours of Le Mans would never be forgotten.  In 2001  the new Mini also received an original flipbook mixing both cartoons and photographs.  Luxury automobile maker BMW  chose to highlight themselves as one of the first car manufactures utilizing the safety of airbags.  Alfa Romeo has also used this product to increase the effectiveness of their marketing campaigns.

McDonald’s definitely knows how effective giving promotions are to increasing the presence of children to their establishment.  In 1981 they gave away FREE flipbooks in their Happy Meals.  The flipbooks consisted of Ronald McDonald, Grimace, The Hamburgler & Officer Big Mac.  The flipbook promotion was 20 pages in length, in color but only single sided.  McDonald’s made a great choice by only using less than 40 pages, the reason being that’s the ideal size for children.

Restaurants will benefit immensely when they add this product to their marketing campaigns.  Kids love collecting things, and since this generation has never had the pleasure of seeing flipbooks, this will create an immediate impact!  Do kids bring news paper clips or magazine ads to show & tell?  Pretty rarely….but the flipbook on the other hand can easily be traded & shared with classmates.

How about providing kids with a collectible series of flipbooks from popular films?  This is a great way to create an emotional engagement with your brand.  Like trading cards; the product will be collected, traded & cherished FOREVER.
